Ahhhhhh....

We got several very rational responses from my last points -- any post that
is sorta kinda along my line of thought being automatically rational. ;-)

1. It was pleasant to find out that, on the CVUG list, there is quite an
appreciation for the OM system, and several OM owners. Pleasant, but
perhaps not that much of a surprise, because there are things in common
between the two user populations. An appreciation for compact, functional
cameras where you really do need to remember to bring both brain AND film
when you set out to shoot pictures. OM photographers are handed a
beautifully crafted body (the camera, I mean -- I can't say much for the
people), some nice lenses, and a realization that the camera is not going to
do all the thinking.

2. The RF will never be my only camera system. I can't do the soccer
photography I like so much with it. If you want to do macro work, you can
do it with RF (complex solution for simple problem)...But why bother when
you can get a decent manual SLR and macro lens for less, and use it less
trouble? RF shooting puts me in a different frame (pun intended) of mind,
and I like being there. I've taken to shooting some vacations and trips in
black and white. I shoot more slowly and more deliberately. With B&W I'll
pass on a lot of shots that I might take in color. Which makes me wonder,
sometimes, why I would have shot it in color. I am comfortable taking only
RF gear (and maybe the Horizon) on a trip...But that's for shooting the way
I want to shoot (YMMV). I can stuff two bodies, five lenses, an incident
meter, small flash, pocket tripod and clamp, and a mess of film into a Domke
F-803 bag (which doesn't look much like a camera bag, by the way).

3. Some of the CVUG bunch have pretty diverse tastes in equipment. Their
kits are sometimes an amazing mix of Leica thread and bayonet bodies and
lenses, old Canon F gear, the new CV equipment, Konica Hexar pieces and
parts, and some of that hot and cold (quality control speaking) Russian
gear. I'm pretty sure that some of them will go shooting with one piece
from each of those categories, and have a swell time, and great pix to show
afterwards. The important thing is that while they are minute niche market
within the larger photo world, right now they have a lot of lenses and
bodies to choose from and that work very well together.

4. Do I _actually_ expect someone sample Voigtlanders and then bundle all
their OM gear up? Not really. That was _my_ solution to some very diverse
shooting requirements, and the need to get down to two primary (can I really
say "two primary") 35mm systems. And I can always visit my early model OM-2
at my brother's.
