A very sad day, indeed.

Galen Rowell was a visual poet, whose pen happened to be a
camera. The technology never was important, always the vision.
He taught many how to "see".

If imitation is the greatest form of flattery, then Galen's
place in photographic history and nature conservancy is secure.
I believe that he wanted nothing more than to make a positive
impact on our world--a goal that he achieved through 33 years
(1969 was his first NatGeo work?) of raising our awareness of
nature, its needs and how we interact with it.

I am a better photographer and a naturalist thanks to Galen
Rowell. It was because of Galen Rowell that I wanted to pursue
a professional photographic career. It was because of Galen
Rowell that I got into both mountain biking and backpacking. His
influence on my life is strong, yet he also taught me how to be
a better photographer by not being a photographer. What Galen
Rowell lacked in photo-technical skills he more than made up for
in tenacity, attitude and "being there".

It had been years since I've communicated with him
directly--only a year since I talked with Barbara, who also
died. They will be missed.

Galen, this one is for you--

"REUNITE GONDWANA!"
