Inkjet bias. Not uncommon. Continuous tone beats dots most of the time (with
the exception of really high end inkjet printers--which are improving and
coming down in price every day).

For "gallery prints" you'll want to send your files to the likes of Nash
Editions, West Coast Imaging, etc. For lower cost photographs I can't say
enough about digital enlargers that use photographic paper and chemistry.
Cost per print is on par with inkjet (if not less if you add in tossed
supplies due to trial and error) and IMO a superior product. Dyesub is still
very good for event photographers--inkjets are too slow and delicate.

My opinion on a home digital darkroom (assuming a sensible budget) is that
inkjet is fine for personal use, proofing, portfolio books, giving prints to
family and friends, etc. But, making photographs for sales are best left to
the professionals IMO (unless you're prepared to make a sizeable investment
in both money and time). Use the low cost labs for high volume and low cost,
and the high end labs for special clients and/or gallery work. One can
easily get so wrapped up in color management and printing workflow that they
never have time to release a shutter ever again--that would be a bad thing
for many of us.

I do realize that making a photograph is a start-to-finish process, and that
having as much total control over every aspect of that process is ideal. I
got all excited about inkjet printing a few years ago, but for my commercial
needs inkjet fails (where a $3k-$5k dyesub from Sony or Kodak would not).
For my personal needs inkjet is great. It is too cool to go shoot something
with the E-10 and come home and print an 8x10 right away.

Now, if only someone would do something like a Fuji Frontier machine at an
affordable price ;-)
