All true that Bill said.  However, some very few one-hour labs change their
chemical regularly and have very skilled printer operators - and regularly
match the quality of pro labs for 4x6 inch prints from negatives.  Those
labs are usually owner-operated, instead of being franchised or a part of a
drug-store chain.  I've trusted two of my sisters' wedding photos to such a
lab here in Arlington.

That said, there is no way for a small operation to match the quality of a
pro lab, consistantly, on the output of an E-6 line.  All of my chromes go
to one of two local pro labs.  And I recently saw some really dreadful
Velvia done by the Fuji lab - scratched and muddy.  Sad thing is, that
photographer sent them the stuff he shot from the back seat of an F-16D.
Tough to get a retake. . .
