Yes, cross-point screws are not the same as phillips screws.  You may be
able to remove a cross-point screw with a phillips driver, but you run the
risk of damaging the screw.  There are two key differences between a
cross-point driver and a phillips driver.  A cross point has a flat bottom
whereas a phillips ends in a point.  In addition, the pitch of the blades
are somewhat different between the two.  Sometimes you can get away with
grinding away the tip of a phillips driver to make it fit better.  It'll
probably work for 990f cross-point screws, but it'll fail at the worst
time, when the screw is really tight.  That's when the head gets stripped,
then you're really screwed (pun intended :-).
