I can say two things about using Linux as part of a digital darkroom. Make SURE that the scanner you get has a Linux driver. To find out about known drivers check http://www.linuxdoc.org and search for the hardware howto. It is possible that if you don't find it there it still exists. (The driver that is.) Next you will want to look at gimp. Gnu Image Manipulation Project (?) I think. It should be available with most Linux distros and is touted as the Photo Shop of the GPL world.
