It is flare. No lens is completely free of flare if you have the sun
in the frame. Some lenses are worse than others. The amount of
possible flare is roughly proportional to the number of elements in
the lens. Telephotos have more elements. Fast lenses have more
elements. If you are going to take this kind of picture you probably
need to select your slowest single focal length normal or longer lens
with the best coatings.
Nice tree. Here is California we call it a cypress though, not cupress. :-)
