think of the monopod as one leg of a tripod; your two legs being the other 
components of this virtual tripod. Instead of holding the monopod vertically, 
hold it slightly leaning inwards towards YOU. that 
way, any sideways motion will also have a to/fro motion (as measured from your 
body), and it's much easier (IMO) to feel and stop to/fro motion than sideways 
motion. So, if you keep your feet firmly on 
the ground (haha!) and slightly lean forward whilst leaning the monopod towards 
you, i think it makes a fairly stable combination. YMMV.
