You know, the Tamron might be a part of the problem too. I have the 28-200, model 71A, the older model that requires a separate, bayonet mount, close-up lens for shots like that. I haven't used it al that much, but from some pics I have taken with it, I have come to suspect that, in some bright color and/or high contrast situations, it seems to take some of the life out of the colors. I'm not really sure yet, but you might check that out, too, by using a good single focal length lens for comparison.
