Back in 1975 I was a young Pilot Officer visiting RAF Bruggen in
Germany where they had stationed 4 squadrons of F4Ms (with RR Spey
engines pushing out 20,000lbs of thrust each in burner). I made the
mistake once of cycling past the end of the runway as a pair took off
over the top of me - at about 150ft.... it was like being thrown into
the fires of hell and I am sure it affected my hearing (pardon?)

Unlimited hydroplanes used to be powered by Merlins and Allisons. Growing
up in Seattle, within biking distance of the race course on Lake Washington,
I've got glorious memories of the sights and SOUNDS of those aptly named
'thunderboats'...
