Honest guv!

Actually, I can recall breaking the (height) rules twice: once when I
was converting to the Jaguar in 1979 and flying over the sea inside
the Hebrides; I went down to about 100ft because I was enjoying the
lovely weather and the gorgeous scenery - a sunny winter's day in the
Isles is just magical with its light and clarity.... ramble, ramble.
However, a large gull got very, very close, scared the living
daylights out of me and I climbed back above 250ft (my minimum). I
must have guardian angel.

The second time was arriving at Trenton AB in Canada, leading a pair
of Tornados in 1992. I had briefed to fly past the tower at 150ft
minimum, but once I got over the airfield it felt really high, so I
drifted down to 100ft; that felt low and fast enough at 500kts.

F104s! I cannot understand why they engendered such loyalty in their pilots...

Javelins!!! That was before I joined, well before :>).

Yeah, Chris, you were all such good boys, always obeying the rules...

One time, standing with my OM1n (content...) on top of Fords of Avon bothy
in the Cairngorms, I was overflown by a Jaguar who came from the north; I
was facing south at the time. You know how it is; you don't hear 'em until
you feel the earth shake.

Well, I was glad I hadn't had bran and prunes for breakfast. I could have
slapped him with a survey staff, and the blast of hot air (hot hot air...)
is with me still.

Speaking of F104s, I remember one of the display teams had their loose pair
do close passes in Widowmakers, 13 times. It can't have been a coincidence.
There was a lot of crashing of 104s at the time, I think they were proving a
point.

I still think that Javelins were the noisiest, though...

Donald.
