I agree that rectangular lens hoods are best; but they're problematic. 
They have to mount in one of the following ways:

1. Bayonet (i.e., zoom petal hoods)
2. Slide-on with an orientation notch (i.e., Leica wide-angle hoods)
3. Thread-on with adjustment for orientation (i.e., new Voigtlander hoods)

Olympus never decided to do anything but a clamp-on or screw-on, except for
the 35-80/2.8.

Not necessarily. The only things that count are the width at the end and 
the distance from the film. Different lenses have different distances, film 
plane to hood thread. But I agree, rectangular to match the film frame is 
best.
