OK, that 2-piece idea would make more sense than a back replacement that I
had mentioned.  But it also will add a lot of bulk/weight.. And I'm still
EXTREMELY skeptical that it will ever make it market and be successful.

Remember, the camera backs of film cameras are designed to house only a
thin layer of film between the film rails.  So any sensor has to fit in
that space between the film plane and the shutter blades.  That's not a
very big space to fit a CCD, with any associated transfer mechanism to
counteract focal plane shifts.

It appears to be a two-piece thing, fitting into almost any SLR, with the 
bottom held on by the tripod screw.
