I think they may still have to end up replacing the back. Otherwise
how-else can they link the CCD to the external unit? The previous
"film canister replacement" unit was completely inside the camera
body and so there is no need to get anything out of the body. But
if this one has to talk to an external unit, then there must be some
connection, unless it is via some broadcast signal (and broadcasting
from inside a completely metal body is also problematic). Even an IR
connection will still require getting an opening for the IR unit to
"talk" to the external unit.

Exactly, so their only chance is to completely replace the back of the
camera -- and you know what that means, only one or two bodies will
be supported. And if they choose Nikon or Canon, they will be competing
directly against those companies and their own in-house digital SLRs.
This may be the best hope for them to develop an Olympus OM back and
corner the market for OM users.
