I've found that helicoid grease may dry up allowing the play amongst all the
moving parts of the helicoid to become an issue.  If the helicoid wobbles
within itself, regreasing may help, but helicoid replacement may be
necessary.

Thanks, Clinton, for the detail - looking in the back of the lens, at full
extension, I can see the mechanism you've described. The movement seems to
be in the outer helicoid thread (closest to the mount) - I can see a little
of the shiny surface of the inside of the outer thread (mount assembly) and
it moves relative to the black rotating part of the focus ring.

I'm not entirely sure I want to tackle this, having bought the lens from a
dealer who'll porbably take it back, or repair it under warranty. However, I
am tempted just to hang onto it, now that I have it... can I do without
it... (early symptom of zuikoholism?  ag...)
