[OM] Repairing a 35/70 3.5~4.5

I bought a second hand 35/70 3.5~4.5 in the UK for £75 (inc VAT) a few
months ago. No case or hood, but in very good condition both cosmetically
and optically and with a 1 year guarantee. It would seem to me that the
price you're being quoted for repair is a little over the top. I suppose
the problem is that the care and work required to repair a lens probably
bears relatively little relationship to how much the lens costs in the first
place, i.e. (and I'm sure someone will shout if I'm getting this wrong)
tightening up the focussing on a 50f1.8 is probably not much easier than on
a 250f2 but the expense is easier to justify on the latter.

That said, maybe Jessops pricing is a bit random - I recently paid £90
($135) for a silvernose 24f2.8 in its original case and with the metal lens
hood; another London shop wanted £150 ($225) for a similar lens without case
or hood.

I do agree that the 35/70 3.5~4.5 is a great "walk about" lens, mainly
because of its size and weight (or lack of both).

Am I out of touch with prices?

<snip>

Quoted repair costs are (in GB pounds) 60 - 85 + parts + VAT (17.5%).....
around $130USD. At that sort of price I'm tempted to dismember it myself - I
was looking for an ultra cheap 50 1.8 for my first experiment but....

Shame really as it was my favorite 'walk about' lens.
