OK, so I got curious.  Happened to have an IBM Microdisk with a bunch of
pictures from Sunday.

So here's the test.  101 images.  338 MB.

Copied using the a Sandisk VC1 card reader (read: Very cheap). Copied
using the camera.

If anyone is interested, I can give you all the details of the computer
configuration, but it doesn't really matter.

Copied using card reader:  6:16
Copied using camera: 9:48

So, about a 500enalty for using the camera rather than a card reader.
