I suspect the impetus here is/was (as is so often the case) economic -- the
friction clutch design is probably much cheaper to build than the pawl-and-gear
design of earlier models.  And as far as "fixing what ain't broke", I believe a
web search will reveal that Olympus holds the patent.  ;^)
