their 19-35 to see if it is any better in this respect?

My 19-35 has a bit of the same problem, I would say it moves just over 0.5mm; sounds as though yours moves quite a bit more if it's 2/3 of a stop. My Vivitar S1 28-90 also has the problem, but not quite as much. Perhaps it's a problem common to all these due to a common OM mount design with too much play?
