I purchased the Ultimate Ballhead. A CF (1228) plus that head is about
3 lbs. The weight definitely means I take the tripod with me more often
than not. Put an arca swiss head on it and it becomes top heavy during
transport. Weight really does make the difference, and yep I could loose
a couple of lbs, but that weight is better distributed and easier to pack
along than a tripod. But if I really want a great photo, the tripod is nearly
indispensable. Of course, everyone's budget is different, but it matters
not how sharp a lens you have without a tripod. I have reduced my basic
kit down to a 28mm, 50mm macro, and 100mm, flash, OM4t a CF tripod
with the ultimate ballhead. (B&H now sells them.)
