 I suspect the best way to do this would be to use a low-power flash, or a
flashlight, or some other dimmer source of light. Sure, it'd take longer,
but you'd have a lot more control over what happened in the final image.
(after all, if you just want to illuminate the whole thing fully, you may as
well just use the flash on TTL or turn the lights on..)

 This is what's going on at
http://www.photo.net/photodb/folder?folder_id=235292 -- the amount of light
that's _not_ in the first shot would be pretty awkward to reproduce with a
flash.

 It must take some time to get the hang of how much light you need and for
how long, though.
