you forgot the ultimate extra touch. They would take 
this transparent gesso like gel and paint it on like 
brushstrokes (for an additional extra charge of 
course).
Accually, since the photo was sealed from the front an 
back (air tight) the photo would be relative archival- 
providing no UV light got to it.
