I've had an interesting talk with a long time OM-enthusiast. His version
sounds reasonable from my point of view:

After the introduction of the OM-systems the lenses were continusly
developed further. After some year`s new computer capabilities, changes
in film technology, changing taste, young engineers with different
views, etc... lead to a change in the idea how a good lens should render an
image. When the customers (esp. japanese) heard of this silent changes
they became insecure when buying Olympus.

To finalize this uncertainity Olympus replaced the silver with the black-noses
on all lenses in 3/1979. And told the customers that they can recognize at this
feature the new lens versions.

Of course is it not possible to exchane a complete lens system with new
variants from one day to another. I guess that some lenses were replaced
erlier others later. So the silvernose is a hint to differentiate
variants but not a evidence.

Another interesting point -he mentioned- is that Olympus didn`t develop their
lenses on calculation and meassureable values only. But they did a lot of
field- testing to find the design which produces the best image in practical
field use, and not the lens which is the best theoretical test performer. This
need`s a lot of efford and is not done so intensivly by any lens manufacturer.

Just, what I've heard...
