Mike - Do your comrades at the track use the predictive auto-focus to good
results? Are there on-track, full-speed situations that are better for AF
or MF? Are the pictures you take with the 350/2.8 different from the ones
with an SOTA AF or IS lens?

great MF pictures by pre-focusing and by panning for cars perpendicular to
me. My old pictures are a testement to that technique. Maybe I'll scan

You're friend is wrong...he just doesn't have the requisite skills.

The Mazda shot is a beautiful example of a "head on" shot...Mike V. was
very likely was not panning, but using the difficult-to-master skill
(especially so as they are closing on you FAST!) of "predictive shutter
release" to get the car just as it "pops" into focus. Bear in mind with a
long telephoto and the lack of depth of field, that's a VERY narrow window.
That's what makes it such an impressive shot with a manual focus lens. It
would be less impressive from that point of view if an image-stabilized
ultrasonic motored predictive focus eye control lens and camera had been
used.

It's entirely possible to take action shots with manual focus lenses....but
it does take skill and a lot of practice.

excellent examples.
