I used to use a "specialized" camera bag when kicking around with my equipment
-- now it's strictly for storage at home, and if I'm dragging around anything
more than a piece or two, I use a smallish backpack I got from Mountain
Equipment Co-op (http://www.mec.ca) here in Canada. (For those of you who live
in the States, Recreational Equipment, Inc. [http://www.rei.com] seems to be
the closest equivalent to MEC.)

MEC has a *huge* variety of backpacks, slingpacks and so forth, their prices
are very reasonable, and you can always buy some of their Evazote foam and
custom-cut compartments or protective padding for your gear. Using padded lens
cases etc. inside the pack works well, too (I do a bit of both). The other
advantage? Everybody in Edmonton seems to carry backpacks at some point in
time, so they don't look like they contain thousands of dollars worth of photo
gear. A certain level of security through obscurity and misdirection, I guess.
