Well, asking anyone from Sydney where the best subjects are is probably not
as clever as asking someone from elsewhere as tourists always seem to know
more about one's home town than one does. But here goes:
Catching the ferry from McMahons Point will bring you to Circular Quay, the
mecca for all the ferry services. Good touristy material here with buskers
etc, the old Customs House building, the art deco Modern Art Museum building
and of course around to the left is the Opera House. Around to the right is
The Rocks area with old convict days buildings, pubs etc and of course views
of the underside of the coat hanger.
Heading straight uptown from the Quay via George or Pitt Streets takes you
through the CBD to Martin Place, the large square with some interesting
buildings, a huge Xmas tree just installed and lit up at night, and at the
top is the very old Sydney Hospital, the State's Parliament House, and the
old soldiers Barracks of colonial times. These are in Macquarie Street
behind which is the Domain (very large park with great views of the
Harbour)and back down Macquarie Street is the Botanic Gardens (also
available from the Opera House end.
Beyond Martin Place i.e., continuing up George or Pitt is the shopping part
of the city. In Pitt Street you can access the Centrepoint Tower which has a
revolving restaurant at the top from which you can almost (but not quite)
see NZ. Then there's the Queen Victoria Building in George Street with,
inside, its very fancy clock that has all sorts of figures jumping around
four times an hour that has just been installed. The QVB has a swag of fancy
(and expensive) shops. From here it is a short walk down to Darling Harbour
with lots of photogenic stuff particularly on weekends including our
National Maritime Museum. At the other end of the QVB is the Town Hall with
St Andrews cathedral next door.
If you're staying in North Sydney you may like to walk across the Harbour
Bridge rather than catch the ferry. This will give you great views of the
city and harbour; you can even go to the top of the South East pylon from
which the views are even better. If you want to you can even take a walk
over the top of the bridge's span but a) this will cost and b) you won't be
permitted to take a camera.
I've been pretty sketchy with my descriptions but you would be quite able to
access all this and more by walking. Of course there are lots of bus and
train services from Circular Quay to take you virtually anywhere within
greater Sydney including Olympic Park which is also worth a visit. And don't
forget the Blue Mountains but you'll need a full day for the latter.
