I must be the list member who is satisfied with his PrimeFilm 1800... though I did have to exchange it once, due to a lock-up in the scan mechanism. At $99 I think it is worth it, but you will have to spend an additional $50 for the Silverfast SE driver software - that made all the difference with mine. I believe there is actually a PrimeFilm 1800 Silver that comes bundled with SilverFast SE, at about $50 more than the base model! I'm sure that many of the $300-$400 units are better than the PF1800, but if you are just trying to get the feel of film scanning and don't want to tie up too many $'s, I'd give it a try (for that matter, I did! And for more $$'s, too) As yet I've not felt the need to jump to a more expensive unit, though I do lust after one with Digital ICE technology on occasion, and I'd really like to be able to scan 120 (6x7) images...
