Re-reading Ken's amusing end-of-year post from last week, I thought
that it was worth mentioning a hand warmer that my sons received from
German friends for Christmas. It is from "coolike.de" (or is
hotlike.de?) and it is a wonderful little thing. It is a polythene
pad containing some translucent chemical and a small metal disc.
When you manipulate the disc, it clicks and the chemical turns opaque
and warms to about 55 degC. It remains warm for about 20 minutes
(but takes a while to cool, especially if insulated), but you can
renew its warming properties by heating it in boiling water for about
5 minutes. The company, which sells several gizmos like this,
promises 2,000 renewals for each pad.
... useful technology, who would have thought it?

I've got a ton of B&W film ready to be exposed, a bag full of
Zuikos focused on the task, the IS-3 is zooming, the OM-2S and
OM-4 are spot-on, winders are wound up, and the tripods are
standing ready. The flash is a bright spot in the bag, but
sadly, the cable-release is only remotely interested. The camera
bag is holding its own. The filters do have an altered view of
reality, though.
The only "heat" I'll be packing is a package of hand-warmers and
my wife!
