As a one time worker in the forests of the US Pacific Northwest I know a
thing or two about staying warm outdoors. Let me tell you that these new
fangled hand warmers are just interesting toys. Being out in the rain
and snow miles from a road I couldn't be popping them in the micro or
boiling every few minutes. "Real" handwarmers are the catylitic type
which use lighter fluid or similar fuel. These are smaller, lighter,
adjustable and much more convenient, put out heat all day. A small can
of fuel will last all week and together with the warmer is less bulky
the these supposedly newer and better things. A tremendous amount of
BTU's is stored in a small space. In the winter I used to carry two of
these warmers, one in each breast pocket under my coat. They could be
moved to another pocket to warm my hands as needed. But most of the time
my hands were busy.. Another example of "new tech" being a step
backwards along with 8 track tape, video, APS film, digtal cameras etc.
Not to say that some of these things can't improve.

Mike
