Because you need an additional contact for "flash quench now" (or keep
on flashing until thispin goes live, maybe).

But here I am assuming, given the premise that Maitani-san must have had
a good reason for adding something to his existing design.

Exactly. No variation during exposure. Simulating an FP bulb with 10,000

little flashes in ~ 1/25 second.

So why do you need any more info other than "Start" from any camera?
