Re: the Vivitar 283. I have two of these beauties that are at least 25
years old, and they're still going strong, even when I leave one or the
other of them unused without batteries for several years, while I don't do
flash or use my T32 and T20s.

I think your 283 might come back to life if you leave the batteries in and
leave it turned on overnight. The capacitor needs reforming, because it's
completely discharged. Whether or not it will take a new charge, I can't
say for sure, but it's worth a try. Great strobes, best ever made.

I should think you would be able to make the 280 do bounce, if by no other
means by taping a little women's purse or pocket mirror at a 45 degree
angle in front of the tube. If you're using TTL metering, it should work
fine. You could also do it if you have cords, by hand-holding it.
