But then I would have to extend the center post an inch or so, and several on this list have advised that that will result in some unpleasant action by the tripod police in addition to inevitably fuzzy pictures :-) . I thought I was supposed to take the center column out, destroy it so others would not be tempted to use it and weld or epoxy a plate to the top of the 'spider'.

Thankfully, I have always ignored that advisc and used my own judgement depending on the characteristics of the tripod at hand and the situation. The center column on my Bogen 3236, for example, probably outwieghs the entire Velbon 343 that started this and is steady as a rock.

Actually, a good idea, but I often hike around nearby regional parks without any bag, or only a tiny, light one, so something I can just put some local rock or dirt in and then empty is more practical.
