I've worn toric lenses for years and never had such problems. Mine have always served me perfect no matter which direction my head was facing :) Maybe you had a bad brand? Then again maybe I'm just used to it...

At least one kind of contact lenses (called "torics," if memory serves) have
little, teeny weights on them to keep them rotated into the proper position.
I have a *very* slight astigmatism, and I tried a pair out once a while
back. They drove me nuts, as you can feel them rotate. Plus, if you tip your
head off to one side or the other, they rotate to the *wrong* position and
screw up your vision. Regular contacts serve me just fine.
