Hi

This has probably already been said but due to the shear number
of posts I'll add another one anyway.

If you need to solder onto a plated battery connection, first
ensure the metal and joint solder is clean, use something like
metho or scrubbing alcohol. If the solder has fallen off, or in the
process of resoldering the joint the solder comes off exposing
the metal, then the correct resoldering procedure is to scrap the
plate metal with a fine file (if you can get to it) so that you leave
cross directional file lines in the metal so that the solder can
better adhere to it. If you cant reach it with a small file then I
would use a small knife to scrap the metal in at least two
different directions, and/or score the surface with the tip
of an exacto knife or something similar.

It is preferable to remove the battery tab prior to attempting
to resolder but this is not always possible.

As others have stated, it is also preferable to heat the metal tab
up first, then apply the solder to the tab and wire, ie, dont apply
the solder to the soldering iron itself, this ensures that you will
end up with a good solid joint, and is one of the reasons so
many joints are weak with heat fractures.

A good 18 to 24 watt soldering iron with a 2mm flatnose tip
is also preferable with your joint.

Cheers
Ian B Manners
