Don't know much about bug photos, but otherwise, don't light too flat. The
thing that communicates three dimensional information to the viewer is the
combination of light and shadow. A totally shadowless photo will make a
three dimensional object look like a cardboard cutout.
The technique is used in fashion photography, although I understand the
effect is beginning to become unfashionable. It is a very distinctive look
that some like, others dislike a lot. It is done with VERY BIG ringlights.
