It's been said before, but maybe it needs to be said again...

It's NOT the gear that's important, it's how it's used.  The two 
"universal truths" of photography are:

1.  A crappy photographer who shoots with an $800 lens will likely 
get crappy results.

2.  A good photography who shoots with a $100 lens will likely get 
good results.

And, in closing, here's Chris' Rules of Photo Gear Ownership:

1.  Buy only what you can afford

2.  For crying out loud, USE what you buy!

3.  Don't waste time and energy feeling bad because you can't 
afford "better."  Instead, see #3

4.  Also don't waste time and energy being jealous because 
someone else can afford "better."  Instead, see #3
