As a sometime Canon printer technician I remember their trainers getting all
paranoid about using non-Canon ink in their squirties. We all nodded
cynically quite believing the tales about enormous profits from consumables
but the opposite is true. In the early nineties Canon spent more on ink R&D
than they did on the design of all their inkjet printers combined. When you
have all those little nozzles (128?) in much the same space as the 5X7 dot
matrix printhead area you've got to have very sexy ink to go through them
all. And slightly more expensive ink is way cheaper than printheads...
John (who's four year old Epson still makes nice pichers with Epson ink).
