Unless a mile is different than 5280 feet, it doesn't matter what the
interval is.  The calculation is simple:

distance travelled
---------------------
fuel used

I happen to own a car with a very sophisticated computer than measures the
actual flow from the injectors (so the return doesn't matter, it is fuel
really burned).  It also measures with great accuracy the distance
travelled.

So, the mpg calculation is startlingly accurate.

Discouraging, but accurate.
