...and I don't understand how a ND filter over the flash unit would not be
'overridden' or 'ignored' by the OTF metering - or am I missing something?

In the spirit of encouraging on topic discussion:

I don't think you could possible overpower anything with the F280.
Seriously, using in the F mode puts out a very small amount of light.
I believe it does have a minimum distance limitation for very close
up.  You might want to get one of the F synch cords for operating it
off the flash shoe to keep it in its operating range.
