I was hoping to use the ND instead of backing off. The problem is two
things sometimes at odds with each other. A certain distance gives
proper fill exposure but maybe not frame the subject. I found myself
going back and forth and ending up with too much flash but got the
picture. No time to mess with swapping lenses or bodies but I could
carry a couple of flash filters.  Maybe a zoom lens would be best.
