There is good illustration of it in Ansel Adams' 'The Negative'.
Threee versions of the same negative - one constantly agitated,
one agitated couple of times every couple of minutes, one not
agitated at all. Differences between them are stunning. And
this was AFAIK a Tri-X - not a very sensitive to changes in
development emulsion..

I rotate reel for first 20', then 5 times every minute (if dev
time < 10') every 2 minutes (if 10' < dev time < 20')(, etc.. :)

...but sometimes I have to refill the pipe, insert pipe cleaner into it,
light tobacco up.. :)))
