The 35-70/3.6 is a special case. Opposite to most zooms, it gets longer as it goes from 70mm to 35mm. This allows the hood, which slip/clamps on behind the part that moves, to be effective at all focal lengths because of the way the angle from the front of the lens to the edge of the hood changes as it is zoomed.
