IMO, the film makers will get their "pound of flesh" at one point or another. While the ratio you cite sounds a tad high, it's been my experience that color negative film is cheap, but they collect their $$$ on the printing end of it. 35mm transparency film is roughly 3X the cost, but the developing and slide mounting is much cheaper, which means they're collecting their $$$ at the front end when you buy the film. My conspiracy theory for the week.

More seriously, think about Fuji's Reala too.
