I'm not sure what we mean by 'high quality' here. When using superteles at a distance, camera movement, air movement, haze, etc. become factors that may overwhelm the best lens. I believe Gary has said that his tests of the long Zuikos didn't really represent the quality inherent in the lenses because of such problems. Technique is a huge factor.

That said, I've been very pleased with my Tokina 150-500/5.6, with what I think are excellent results at 500mm. A stop slower than the Tamron 400/4 at 400mm but essentially equal with the 400+1.4x, 500/5.6 vs. 560/5.6 and likely equal or better performance. Plus all those other focal lengths!

Above 400mm? There really isnt anything of high quality except the 600mm
Zuiko. I don't count mirror lenses.

The Tamron 400/4 with the 1.4x or 2x matched Adaptall converters are probably
the best that exists. I'm pretty comfortable that the Tamron would beat the
400mm Zuiko hands-down.
