Dan -- Normal 50mm lens is 1X magnification. So binoculars that are 10X
magnification will be equivalent to a 50 x 10 = 500mm lens. The difference
is that with binoculars you see a round circle, the 500mm lens in your
viewfinder will be a rectangular piece of the round image circle (but with
the same magnification). Any thing above about 300mm (or 6X) is very hard to
hand hold unless you use fast film and high shutter speeds...
