I don't think that digital has made the lack of education about photography
any worse than it already has been. I think that the bulk of that damage was
done with the advent of point and shoot photography. The public has been
told for years that they can just click a button and get amazing photos
without having to know anything about photography. I don't see that as
something new that's come up since digital came out. Now yes, digital does
encourage these same people to now take more bad photos and to share them
with everyone so you do see more bad photos but the education level has
stayed the same, it's just our exposure to it that's increased.

If anything though, I think that digital does offer great opportunities for
people to improve their photography if they're willing to put in the effort.
For one, the ability to instantly see your results means that you can
examine the shot and make try different things right away to see what works.
Yes, probably 900f all digital shooters won't do this or won't use it as a
learning tool but I think that's about the same percentage as point and
shoot users who won't learn from their previous shots.

Personally, I'm still holding out. Mostly this is on the basis of quality
but I do have some concerns about size, weight, and over-dependence on
batteries. All of these things were factors in leading me to go with OM in
the first place (switching from C*n*n). I do think that these issues will be
resolved for me within the next few years and then I will probably make the
switch, at least with 35mm. However, I can easily see myself staying with
film in other formats and for specific applications.
