as well as the Tamron 28-105/2.8 which is an $800 new lens (B&H ) vs. the Zuiko 
35-80.

Walt swears by his 28-105/2.8 and I believe he also has the Zuiko 35-80. The 28-105 is quite a bit bigger and heavier than the Zuiko. The Tamron SP 35-105/2.8 is a more direct comparison with the Zuiko in size/weight:
