My advice is to leave your own fingerprints on the camera. At all times.
For example, I don't leave my car keys on the table at a party. If I engraved
my social security number on the keys would a thief
hestitate for a millisecond? Why would I leave my camera on the table?

Social security number is no good for marking your possessions. <edit>
I don't know what the situation is nowadays with drivers' license
numbers.<edit>I don't know what would be the best ID information to attached to
your possessions.
