When a 4 series body senses a TTL capable flash is attached, it sets a
fixed 1/60 shutter speed, no matter whether in Manual or Auto mode, so
it is impossible to use a longer speed to balance ambient light without
fooling the camera. I remember blocking the TTL ready light connection
works with the OM-2n, but don't remember if it does with the 4 series.

With the 3 series, the mechanical shutter gives whatever speed you have
set, so you can use aperture, flash output power (with choice of flash
model, switchs, diffusers, etc.) and shutter speed to control the ratio
between ambient and flash light. Nobody said it was automatic, or even
easy, but it can be done. There is, of course, only one shutter mode on
the 3, manual.
