The QR plate has 2 screw adjustments so one can assure a firm grip with tripod sockets of any depth. without ant danger of bottoming in shallow ones. The black knurled thumb screw actually threads into the socket. the larget, cast gray knob screws up the thread on the central screw to pull the camera down against the plate. The way I use it is to screw the central screw into the camera until it gently bottoms, then use the larger collar, which gives more leverage, to tighten the connection. I think it is a superior design as it allows a really firm grip without without any danger of bottoming in a shallow tripod socket and damaging the camera.

I generall like the 3047. the only real problem I've encountered is is that you have to use it in reverse for high angle shots, with the elevation handle pointing away from you, which is slightly awkward..

I bought a used Bogen 3047 3-way head without instructions.

I bolt the camera onto the quick-release plate securely but when I flip the
camera to take a horizontal shot, the camera rotates
around the screw, as if "voting" for straight down instead of "vertical".
